You won't use the word ICON in vain

ICON:

1. a conventional religious painting in oil on a small wooden panel; venerated in the Eastern Church
2.(computer science) a graphic symbol (usually a simple picture) that denotes a program or a command or a data file or a concept in a graphical user interface

Why magazines and some bloggers are using the word ICON so much? I am very upset about it. The dictionary does not include the meaning it has in magazines. But now, Natalia Vodianova is an icon, and Agyness, and the Birkin (*I agree), and Nicole Richie and ... the list is endless.
Are we sure? Who is going to talk about Agyness in 10 years? -And I am being optimistic because probably in two-three years we are not going to even remember her. For example, Audrey Hepburn is an icon, she has died and her place in fashion history is inmovable, ok, but come on! could we just use the word properly? Do you think its use is abusive?

ICONO:

Great point!

I will call it "iconic ironic idiotarcracy"!

As you state, most you mentioned, among others, are a fad not an icon.
If they have staying power longer than one generation, maybe consider it, but not until then... nuh uh.
The word is extremely over used.

btw love the quote about fashion fading and style remaining.

you have a point. i totally agree with you. but every time i come to read sth like that i just don't pay attention. agynness an icon? of course not. the girl is here 3 years only. but it's this thing that i realised that in the fashion world people tend to exaggerate in the words they choose and in how they express themselves.

a+

no sé que criterios deben seguir para proclamar iconos, porque por experiencia Agyness sobraría, aunque sea buena. y qué guapa está natalia siempre. un saludo!

People are definitely too quick to give certain titles out--like that most influential dress poll and the top were all movies made in the past few years. But I think you can also use icon as someone you look up to very highly.

como todo en la industria de la moda, hasta la palabra icon es una cosa muy passagera, que 6 meses después cambian las personas y otros icons son nominados...

bueno post!
muchos besos,
Kira

It seems like every time a celebrity steps of the house in some thing other than track pants the media brands them fashion icons (HELLO! Mary-Kate and Ashley)!

Sure the word is overused, taking a careful look we can only say those are falling stars, not icons. I guess Agyness is just a passenger idol, i don't mind she will leave a permanent imprint in the history of fashion...and i hope.

YES. I think it is over used. I mean "Queen Aggy"? Come on.

LOL, good point girl! I do think that word is abused, but so are so many other things in this world and the only thing we can do is be an exception.

Thought provoking post!

I found that Agyness issue of ID very cringe worthy. It seems like its a word that's being used a lot in the media these days without much thought behind it.

Many words in our language are appropriated for in appropriate use: "gifting" is not a verb, though more and more, we find that it is used as such. "Lunhcing" is not a verb, yet it has earned virtually-legitimate verb status.

"Icon" is just another instance of the bastardization of language to serve a new purpose. It's interesting that you point out that the two definitions of "Icon" are at either end of the substance extremes. Sharp of you.

Alas, it's language evolution!
