Best shops in town - II

Esquina is a very urban shop located in Plaza Galicia, in Santiago de Compostela. It offers an interesting selection of clothes by Spanish designers such as Sita Murt. (I really love the blue long dress by her which appears on the video). The relationship between quality and price is good, and there are different styles to choose from.

Esquina es una tienda de ropa muy urbana, situada en Santiago de Compostela. Ofrece una selección de prendas muy interesantes, especialmente las que están firmadas por diseñadores españoles, como Sita Murt (me encanta el vestido largo azul que aparece en el vídeo). La relación calidad-precio no está nada mal, y tienen muchos estilos diferentes de dónde elegir.

I am off

I want to say sorry for not posting these days. My grandmother has passed away last tuesday night, and my family and I are devastated. Posts and reading your lovely blogs will be back to normal in two days. Thanks for the understanding.

Best shops in town - I

In two days I am leaving my Uni-city, Santiago de Compostela. Time flies! I think it was fair to make some justice with this tourist city when talking about shopping. That is why I've done this series of three interviews with best shops in town' owners. It hasn´t been an easy work, so I hope you enjoy today the first of them.

*English speakers: obviously the video is in Spanish. I feel sorry about that but I couldn't add subtitles with the programme I've used, so I've made a summary of what they said down there, but I recommend watching the video anyway, because clothes are fabulous.

En dos días me iré de la ciudad que me ha acogido como universitaria, Santiago de Compostela. El tiempo pasa volando... Creo que lo más justo, y el mejor homenaje que podría hacerle, es éste que aquí os presento. He seleccionado las que considero las mejores tres tiendas de moda de Santiago, y he hablado con las dueñas. El resultado es una serie de tres vídeos que comienza hoy. En los vídeos podéis ver las tiendas por dentro, las prendas que venden, y la entrevista con la dueña. Espero que mi esfuerzo haya merecido la pena. Ya me contaréis.

This shop was launched two months ago, and it has become a great success. Its perfect floor from 1940, together with the great decoration made it one of my favourites shops at first glance. However, best of all are the fabulous dresses they have inside. Coveted still affordable brands such as Masscob, Maje, Alberta Ferretti or Erva are available here. Seriously, if you are looking for the perfect dress, this is the place. They have urban and party dresses, neutral colours and clean cuts, pure elegance in each garment. Both shop-assistants are friendly, honest and happy to help, make this shop a must-see if you love fashion and you come over Santiago some day.

Esta tienda ha sido fundada hace dos meses y ya se ha convertido en un gran éxito. El maravilloso suelo original de 1940, unido a la elegante decoración, hicieron de esta tienda una de mis favoritas a primera vista. Y lo mejor aún estaba por llegar. Dentro tienen una selección de vestidos para cualquier ocasión que responden a las exigencias de cualquiera: Masscob, Maje o Erva son solo tres ejemplos de los vestidos y accesorios firmados por diseñadores jóvenes y rompedores que ofrecen en Mimolett. Las dependientas son amables y se muestran en todo momento atentas ante las necesidades del cliente. Por todo ello, si te gusta la moda y pasas por Santiago, no dejes de visitar esta tienda.

Erva

Do you know them? Probably you do. Erva is a handbag brand launched by two Spanish girls, Eva and Sara. They design bag, incredible bags. They have magical clutches, elegant, modern, chic and still wearable on daily basis. Honestly, I think they are best Spanish designers in handbags at the moment. They started this adventure in 2000 in London, where they launched their brand. All her bags are made of leather, and they are constantly studying and experimenting with new ways of working leather. That is why their designs are so innovative: flowers, pleats...

Prices are quite high, but saving a bit, you can get an eternal bag -probably it-bag to be-. They always guarantee that the bags are made in Spain, mostly because the big craftsmen tradition we have here.

¿Las conoces? Erva son un dúo de dos chicas españolas, Eva y Sara, que diseñan bolsos. Bolsos increíbles. Mis favoritos son los bolsos caja, son elegantes, modernos, chic y se pueden poner a diario sin forzar demasiado el look. Honestamente, yo creo que se han labrado a pulso un lugar entre los grandes de España en materia de bolsos. Empezaron su aventura en el año 2000, cuando vivían en Londres, donde crearon su marca. Todos los bolsos están hechos en piel. Ellas están constantemente desarrollando estudios y experimentando con nuevas maneras de trabajar la piel, de ahí que sus diseños sean tan innovadores: pliegues, flores, arrugas...

Los precios son bastante altos, pero ahorrando un poco, se puede conseguir un bolso increíble, con vistas a la eternidad. Además, ellas garantizan que los bolsos son siempre made in Spain, más que nada, por un tema de orgullo, ya que tenemos grandes artesanos de la piel aquí.

And so does SJP. Both were wearing brooches in the last weeks. Why are they doing that? I don't know. The cyclical circle of fashion is in the Seventies right now, and Seventies are everything but brooches.

However, you don't need to be a coolhunter to be aware of the fact that next season brooches will be a must. If not, just let matters take their course.

Chloé es una de las pocas que en los tiempos que corren se puede permitir establecer las tendencias que las demás seguiremos a su antojo. Su influencia en el mundo de la moda es innegable. Así como la influencia de la gran SJP (¡por fin hoy es el estreno de SATC en España!). Las dos llevaron broches en las pasadas semanas. ¿Por qué? No se sabe. El círculo cíclico de la moda está estacionado en los setenta, y en los setenta se llevaba todo menos los broches. Sin embargo, y después de ver a estas dos con broches, no hace falta ser un cazatendencias para darse cuenta que los broches serán un must de la próxima temporada. Y si no, tiempo al tiempo.

Why I love Ascot

Ascot is a really good place to be in right now. The epithome of English cool, each year this little English town celebrates its annual party. The dress code is implacable. I think it's great having these rules for one day. It's like going to a wedding, but you can wear white! A perfect ocassion to wear hats, I guess everyone should go there at least once.

Royal Enclosure Dress Code

Her Majesty’s Representative wishes to point out that only formal day dress with a hat or substantial fascinator will be acceptable.Off the shoulder, halter neck, spaghetti straps and dresses with a strap of less than one inch and / or mini skirts are considered unsuitable. Midriffs must be covered and trouser suits must be full length and of matching material and colour. Gentlemen are required to wear either black or grey morning dress, including a waistcoat, with a top hat which must be worn at all times when you are in the Royal Enclosure other than within your private box or facility”. Note that box balconies, restaurant terraces and gardens will be deemed to be “within” the facility.

Ascot es el mejor lugar en el que estar estos días. English cool en estado puro, cada año se celebra allí la fiesta nacional de los caballos, digo, de los sombreros. La etiqueta es implacable, pero yo creo que está bien, solo por un día, es incluso divertido.

Solo serán aceptables vestidos de día formales, con un sombrero o similar. Los escotes halter, palabra de honor, tirantes finos (menos de una pulgada) y minifaldas se considerarán inapropiadas. El estómago debe ir cubierto, y los trajes de pantalón deben ser largos y del mismo material y color. To those who died for keeping us informed

This is a sculpture dedicates to the journalists who died when covering wars. It's installed in the flat roof of the BBC building, in London. Each night, it projects light in the memory of those dead journalists. Most of times we don't pay attention to those brave ones who are risking their lives to keep us informed, to those who think first in the rest, and then in theirselves, to those who give preference to their work more than to their own lives. And they deserve it, really.

In the last ten years, two war-reporters per week have died. Information is extremely important for democracies, and so does for people.

The crystal sculpture was designed by a Spanish artist, Jaume Plensa.

Esta escultura, que se halla en la azotea del edificio de la BBC en Londres, está dedicada a todos los periodistas que mueren informando. Normalmente no se tiene demasiado en cuenta a aquellos que literalmente se juegan la vida por informar al resto. A aquellos que llevan la información a su más alto grado, a aquellos que anteponen su trabajo a su vida. Y realmente lo merecen, y mucho. En los últimos diez años, cada semana murieron dos periodistas de guerra. Es un escándalo, pero los datos están ahí.

Topshop is doing us a great favour. Ankle-high gladiator sandals are quite easy to find at any shoe-shop. However, finding the high and still affordable ones is a bit difficult. That's why I want to share with you these two pairs.

Topshop nos está haciendo un gran favor. Las sandalias estilo gladiador cuya altura no supera el tobillo son relativamente fáciles de encontrar en cualquier zapatería. What digital era stole us...

The inventor of Polaroid was an American, Edwin Herbert Land. He was a freshman at Harvard University when he became interested in polarized light (1926).

In 1937 the group became the Polaroid Corporation with Land as president and head of research. Two weeks ago I saw this book on a bookshop window, and I couldn't avoid but coming in and check how it was, and how much it was. Lucky me, Taschen has decided to give us offer price, and it was only 10 euros! Scandalous!! And great taking into account the inside pictures are quite good. An awesome keepsake for showing to our grandchildren.

Hace dos semanas pasé por delante de una librería y vi este libro en el escaparate. No pude evitar entrar. Ahora que todos sabemos que la Polaroid ha dejado de fabricarse, tenía ganas de tener un recuerdo tangible para enseñar a mis nietos... Por dentro es mejor aún que lo que se adivina al ver la portada, y el precio fue de risa: ¡10 euros!

Summer sales...

It's quite difficult not buy expensive clothes during the season, but the high prices of cool brands make it impossible. However, when the sales start, I am all the time checking at websites to see if I can find some bargains. Despite most of the things are still unaffordable (especially if you are a student), saving a bit you can buy a designer piece that would last forever. Here some examples.

Es bastante difícil no comprar cosas caras durante la temporada, pero los precios altos de la ropa de diseñador lo hacen prácticamente imposible. Sin embargo, cuando empiezan las rebajas, estoy todo el rato mirando las páginas web para ver si puedo encontrar algún chollo. Muchas de las cosas son inasequibles aunque estén rebajadas (sobretodo si eres estudiante), pero ahorrando un poco puedes comprar alguna prenda de un diseñador que te durará para siempre y que al final amortizas más que la ropa de Inditex. Aquí os van algunos ejemplos.

Researching on Internet I've found some serious old material. Probably in UK you had seen these pictures weeks ago (wedding was in June), but that headdress is amazing! Princess Beatrice looks great, I've never been awared of her style, but I'll follow her.

Sandals, the most antique shoes on earth

Our ancestors knew about the importance of a good pair of sandals. In fact, sandals were the first shoes ever. Egiptian paintings, dating back to seven thousand ago, showed the process to make a sandal. Egiptian sandals were made of straw, papyrus and palm tree's fibre, and only the most powerful nobles owned one pair. It was common to carry the sandals on your shoulders, and use them only when it was necessary.

Like today, in Rome shoes were an unequivocal sign of their owner's social status. Gladiator sandals, a must for this summer, are thousands of years old.

The first reference in manufactured shoes was in 1642, in England, when Thomas Penddlton made 4.000 pair of shoes and 600 pair of boots for the army.

After the Fourties, shoes' industries start to use synthetic materials, such as rubber soles, especially in women and children shoes.

Nuestros antepasados conocían tan bien como nosotros la importancia de unas buenas sandalias. De hecho, las sandalias fueron el primer calzado del que se tiene constancia en la Terra. Pinturasegipcias que datan de hace 7000 años muestran el proceso de creación de un par de sandalias. Las sandalias egipcias estaban hechas de paja, papiro y fibra de palmera. Solo los hombres más poderosos iban calzados en aquella época. Era muy común llevar las sandalias en los hombros, y utilizarlas solo cuando era estrictamente necesario, más que nada para evitar su desgaste.

Como hoy en día, los zapatos en Roma eran un signo inequívoco del estatus social de su dueño. Las sandalias de gladiador, un must de esta temporada, son un diseño clave de la era romana.

La primera referencia que tenemos de zapatos manufacturados fue en 1642, y se le atribuye al inglés Thomas Penddlton, que hizo proyectó 4000 pares de zapatos y 600 pares de botas para el ejército.

Tras los años '40, la industria zapatera cambió radicalmente al introducir materiales sintéticos, como las suelas de goma. Este cambio tuvo lugar sobretodo en las colecciones de mujer y de niño.

Erasmus, missing you

This looks like the nostalgic week (and I am sorry). But I had to do this post. Maybe you don't know, but last year I spent my academic year in UK, not only to improve my English, but also to study as main subject fashion journalism. I must recommend you all to take Erasmus if you can. It's a unique opportunity.

Declaro oficialmente esta semana como la semana de la nostalgia, y lo siento mucho. Pero realmente tenía que hacer este post. Quizás no lo he mencionado antes, pero el año pasado estuve estudiando en Inglaterra, de Erasmus. No fui solo para aprender inglés -que también, obviamente- sino para especializarme en periodismo de moda, ya que en mi universidad no había esa posibilidad. Este post es simplemente para recordar ese año, y para recomendaros, a aquéllos que tengáis la oportunidad, que vayáis. Es una experiencia única.

Our neighbour, Southampton (UK)

Erasmus is an agreement that many European universities have. Thanks to it students have to possibility to spend one year studying the same degree but in another country. It's as simple as an ex-change. If you are clever enough to take advantage of it (and not only getting drunk) your life changes completely. You become open-minded. You have friends almost everywhere. You learn about another culture, language, another way of teaching. Choices are endless.

Erasmus es un acuerdo que tienen muchas universidades de Europa. Gracias al mismo, los estudiantes tienen la posibilidad de pasar un año académico en otro país, siempre dentro de Europa. El intercambio es perfecto porque te convalidan todas las asignaturas que haces en el país de destino, y no pierdes el año. Si eres lo suficientemente listo como para ir a algo más que a emborracharte, tu vida cambia irremediablemente. Te vuelves más abierto de mente -quieras o no-. Tienes amigos en casi todas las partes del mundo. Aprendes sobre otras culturas, aprendes otro idioma (más o menos, jeje) y sobretodo, ves que hay vida más allá de tener que chaparte unos inútiles apuntes, porque hay más métodos de enseñanza que el español (y menos mal). Las opciones son interminables.

Here my housemates. I was so scared when I left my home, thinking all the time, who I am going to live with?. And then, I met them. It was more than enough. It was more than I've never imagined. They were perfect housemates, and also my family in that nine months than I'll never forget. Marianna showed me what an elegant girl is, and what was the real meaning of Made in Italy. Best-mate in London shopping;)! Diana showed me how you can think is never too clean :P, but above all, she showed me the advantages of the patience, perseverance, collateral damages (jaja, meaning Julien) and so many good receipts I still keep. Ingrid showed me what a good person is, always with a smile on her face, facing problems and believing in love, no matter what. This post is for you girls. Thanks for have being there last year, and of course, thanks for still being, and let me know you'll always be. Today it has been one year without seeing you. I miss you!!

Aquí están mis compañeras de casa. Aún recuerdo el miedo que me invadió cuando ya me iba, cuando estaba en el aeropuerto pensando, ¿con quién viviré? Y entonces llegué allí, y las conocí a ellas. Fue más que suficiente, fue mucho más de lo que nunca me había imaginado. Fueron unas compañeras de piso perfectas, y también fueron mi familia durante esos nueve meses que jamás olvidaré. Marianna me enseñó lo que es una mujer elegante, y cuál es el verdadero significado de Made in Italy, y la mejor compañera de shopping-londinense. Diana me enseñó cómo aunque brille, nunca está demasiado limpio (jaja) y sobretodo, las ventajas de tener paciencia y ser perseverante, como neutralizar a los daños colaterales (jaja, Julien) y muchas buenas recetas que aún conservo. Ingrid me enseñó qué es ser una buena persona, siempre con una sonrisa en su cara, afrontando los problemas según venían, y creyendo, SIEMPRE, en el amor sin condiciones.

Este post es para vosotras, chicas. Gracias por haber estado ahí el año pasado, gracias por estarlo aún, y gracias por demostrarme que nunca dejaréis de hacerlo. Hoy se cumple un año y ¡Os echo de menos!

As most of you know, last weekend was my graduation. I hate being so egocentric here, but many of you want to know how did I look at the end -after your lovely advices-, so here it's. Finally I got some pictures to I can show you!

This year is all about the hairstyle. Plaits are the key to any look. That's why I decided to make my hairstyle the strong part in the graduation's look. The hairstyle were two symmetrical plaits with a tied up covering the neck.

Como muchos de vosotros ya sabéis, el fin de semana pasado fue mi graduación. Odio ser tan egocéntrica, pero como muchos me estáis preguntando que cómo fui al final, -tras vuestros adorables y sabios consejos-, creo que lo mínimo era un post para que podáis verlo.

Este año parte de la atención se centra en el pelo. Las trenzas son una clave en cualquier look. Por eso decidí que el peinado sería la parte fuerte del look. El peinado se basaba en dos trenzas simétricas con la raya al medio, y con un recogido por detrás.

Once again, I just want to say thanks to all of you. I am still impressed at how nice it's having a blog, above all in moments like that, when you panic, and you feel you are not alone, because you were there answering me so fast, really, thanks a lot!

*As I already explain to many, I did wear this look because the second was more difficult as the belt was too thin to hold up properly the scarf.

Una vez más, quería daros las gracias a todos. La verdad es que aún estoy impresionada sobre lo estupendo que es tener un blog, sobretodo en esos momentos de pánico, cuando te parece que estas sola ante el peligro, y de repente todo cambió gracias a vosotros. ¡Muchas gracias!

*Ya lo he explicado en algunos comments pero por si alguien no lo ha visto, al final llevé este look en lugar del segundo, por el que habéis votado todos, porque estaba mucho más cómoda ya que el cinturón era demasiado fino y no sujetaba muy bien el pañuelo.

The day after the mourning day

I am still disturb about YSL's death. I can't assume the last couturier has died. So simple, as the rest of mere mortals. Cerebral tumour. That's all. The end of one of the best designers in the last century. All of us owned something to him. He didn't just influenced people who bought his clothes, but everybody. Le smoking, transparent blouse, he gave women powder. We can't never forget that. When people say to me that terrible sentence: "Being interested in art is cool, being interested in fashion is frivolous", he comes to my mind. Fashion never had a most perfect convergence between art and fashion. He was the epitome of that. He was pure art: his life, his creations, his sensitivity, his way of doing women's lives easier. Yesterday post was a tribute, today's is an affirmation: I will never forget him, and I hope you either.

I can't think in a better tribute to YSL than wearing his clothes, as wise Carolina and Diane did yesterday at the CFDA's. Both in vintage YSL, Diane in black, mourning maybe? I guess so. I was looking at the CFDA's outfits with the aim of doing a post about the best-dressed, but I can't. Why? Because today I am not impartial, and these two ladies have my vote, not only for the respect they show, but also for the elegance wearing his designs.

Aún estoy trastornada con la muerte de YSL. No soy capaz de asumir que el último gran couturier ha muerto. Es demasiado simple, es algo -probablemente lo único- que comparte con los demás, meros mortales. Tumor cerebral. Eso es todo. El final de uno de los grandes diseñadores del siglo XX ha sido tan simple como podría ser el mío, o el tuyo. Realmente todos le debemos algo a YSL. Influenció a todas las mujeres, no solo a aquellas que pudieron permitirse sus diseños. Los esmoquins, las blusas transparentes, él agitó su afilado lápiz en pro de hacer poderosa a la mujer, hasta entonces bastante indefensa. No podemos olvidar eso. Cuando la gente me dice esa terrible frase "Estar interesado en el arte es guay, pero estar interesado en la moda es frívolo", él viene a mi mente. Nunca se dió en la historia de la moda una convergencia tan perfecta entre arte y moda, su persona era eso. El post de ayer intentaba ser un tributo a un genio, y el de hoy es una afirmación: nunca lo olvidaré, y espero que vosotros tampoco.

No puedo pensar en un tributo mejor a YSL que llevar sus diseños, como hicieron ayer las sabias Carolina y Diane, a la gala de los CFDA. Las dos iban en YSL vintage, Diane de negro, luto quizás? supongo que sí. Estaba mirando los modelitos que pasaron por la alfombra roja de NYC, intentando hacer un post sobre las mejor vestidas, pero no puedo. ¿Por qué? pues porque hoy no soy imparcial, y estas dos mujeres tienen mi voto, no solo por el respeto que mostraron con este gesto, sino también por la elegancia con la que llevaron sus diseños.

Yves Saint Laurent has passed away

The charismatic, Argelian designer Yves Saint Laurent, one of the best designers in XX century, has passed away yesterday night in Paris, at 23.10 after a long illness. He was 71 years old.

El carismático diseñador nacido en Argelia, Yves Saint Laurent, ha fallecido ayer a las 23.10 en París víctima de una larga enfermedad. Él fue uno de los mejores diseñadores del siglo XX. Tenía 71 años.

He contributed strongly to the legend of Paris as the fashion city par excellence. He was the youngest designer ever in Haute Couture, because he started to work for Dior at the age of 18. However he'll be remembered in fashion history as the first designer who got an exhibition in a museum, it was in 1983, and of course, in the Metropolitan (NYC).

He created a Haute Couture more realistic, suitable for the times they were living. Furthermore, he introduced the smoking (1966), a typical male outfit, in women's closet, and it was a total success.

His career

He worked in Dior from 1954 to 1960, when he was asked to serve the French military service. He even had replaced the master, Christian Dior, in 1956. However he went back to Paris in 1962 after finishing the military service, only to find out he had been replaced by Marc Bohan in Dior. So he sued them for moral damage, and with the money he got, he launched his own maison. Pierre Bergé was the business man, and he was the designer. They were a perfect team. His love for art made him get inspired by artist such as Mondrian, Picasso or Braque.

The maison had Haute Couture, prêt-à-porter, cosmetics and license for bags, scarves, and so. He retired in 2002 at the age of 65, after a succesful career in fashion. He received several awards, such as the Neiman Marcus Couture Oscar, in 1958, or Harper's Bazaar's, in 1966. Also the Legion of Honour of France, in 1985.

His designs were pure creativity.
