This year has been quite good. Despite the huge crisis we are in and the constant mention of money on the news and every-day-conversations, it is great to see how we manage to keep on writing and blogging just because we like it, and not because of the money. Isn't it a dream? For me it is. I hope you all have a fantastic 2009!

Este año ha sido bastante bueno. A pesar de la gran crisis -en España ya conocida como recesión- en la que estamos metidos, a pesar de la mención constante del dinero en los informativos y en las conversaciones diarias, es fantástico ver cómo nos las hemos apañado para seguir escribiendo y blogueando, simplemente porque nos gusta, y no por el dinero. ¿No es como un sueño? Para mí sí. ¡Espero que todos tengáis un fabuloso 2009!

Twee?

It is necessary to recognize that these cosmetics by YSL are a bit posh and maybe twee, however, I cannot help but adore them. Especially today, that we all -well, almost all- are celebrating the New Year's Eve, they are great to carry on the festive clutches we have bought.

Es necesario reconocer que estos cosméticos de YSL son un poco pijos, incluso cursis, pero no puedo evitar que aún así, me encanten. Especialmente hoy, que todos -bueno, casi todos- celebramos fin de año, son perfectos para llevar en nuestras festivas carteras de mano.

A single man

The filming has started. "A single man" will be the first film by Tom Ford, the succesful designer who has officially become a scriptwriter and director. Colin Firth and Julianne Moore are the main characters. The story is based on a homosexual teacher's life and how his boyfriend dies in a car accident. The film will relate the last day of his life and it is set in Los Angeles, around 1960. The film is a screen version of the homonym novel by Christopher Isherwood.


El rodaje ya ha comenzado. "A single man" será el estreno cinematográfico de Tom Ford, el diseñador que se encargó de resucitar la firma italiana Gucci. Colin Firth y Jualianne Moore serán los protagonistas de esta cinta que narra la historia de un profesor homosexual que pierde a su novio en un accidente de coche. La película está ambientada en Los Ángeles en 1960, y cuenta el último día en la vida de esta pareja. La cinta es una adaptación de la novela homónima escrita por Christopher Isherwood.

Melanie Georgacopoulos, the pearl charmer

Melanie Georgacopoulos has his own place at Dover Street Market. She studied Sculpture in Edinburgh and then graduated in Jewellery from the Royal College of Art in 2007.

She is a very versatile designer, her artistic background has enabled her to work with pieces for the catwalk, designing commercial lines or producing luxurious pearl necklaces for her RCA graduation show. Her work with pearls is exquisite and innovative at the same time. Not only the classic ones can find eternal pieces among her designs, but also those who don't renounce quality but demand avant garde works.

Melanie Georgacopoulos tiene su parcela propia en Dover Street Market (Londres). Melanie estudió escultura en Edimburgo, y tras esto, decidió orientar su carretera por los derroteros de la joyería, ya que se graduó de esta materia en 2007 por el Royal College of Art.
Es una diseñadora muy versátil, su entorno favorable, siempre relacionado con el arte, le ha permitido trabajar en diversos campos, desde piezas para desfiles, hasta líneas comerciales, sin olvidar los collares de perlas para su show de graduación del RCA. Su trabajo con las perlas es exquisito e innovativo al mismo tiempo. No solo las chicas que siguen un estilo clásico pueden encontrar piezas eternas entre sus diseños, sino también aquellas que no renuncian a la calidad, pero que exigen patrones estéticos más rompedores.

Carine has won the battle against Anna Wintour long ago and she is now the one who decides what are we wearing. As time passes by, we are more into the economic crisis, fashionistas from all over the world are assuming the responsability and they are going black. I cannot avoid the overused "black is back" expression, but, has it ever left?

Carine ha ganado la batalla contra Anna Wintour hace tiempo y es ella la que decide ahora qué nos ponemos. A medida que el tiempo va pasando, nos vamos adentrando más y más en las oscuras profundidades de la crisis económica, y los fashionistas de todo el mundo están asumiendo la responsabilidad, el uniforme vuelve a ser negro. No puedo evitar la expresión, tan sobreexplotada, de "black is back" (el negro ha vuelto) pero, en realidad, ¿ha llegado a irse alguna vez?

The industry of now... can we have it all?

We are used to have everything right after we desire it. If we want a pair of new jeans, we can't wait, we have to buy them immediately. That is good and bad. Good because -I am talking about Spain- most of our parents couldn't enjoy the prosperity we enjoyed until this huge crisis arrived. And bad, because we are not able to suppress our needs of shopping when we just cannot afford it.
Resisting the temptation is so hard! Every website has links to the abyss of massive shopping. It doesn't matter what: books, shoes, clothing, music... internet is the key to the dreamland. Everything is possible, but I am starting to think that this consumerism is insane. Maybe is because I am reading Chomsky too seriously, maybe because marketing executives are too good, but honestly, how can you desire another pair of shoes when you have more than fifty in your wardrobe?

Estamos acostumbrados a tenerlo todo siempre que lo deseamos. Si queremos un nuevo par de vaqueros, no podemos esperar, tenemos que comprarlos inmediatamente. Eso es bueno y malo. Bueno porque -hablo de España- muchos de nuestros padres no disfrutaron de la bonanza económica que estábamos viviendo hasta ahora. Malo porque no somos capaces de controlar nuestras necesidades de comprar cuando simplemente no nos lo podemos permitir. ¡Resistir la tentación es tan duro! Cada página web tiene enlaces que te llevan hacia el abismo de las compras, no importa el qué: libros, zapatos, ropa, música... internet es la clave para la tierra soñada. Todo es posible, pero está claro que este afán de consumismo ha de ser insano. Quizás es porque estoy leyendo demasiado a Chomsky, o quizás es porque los directivos del marketing son demasiado buenos, pero honestamente, ¿desde cuándo tener en tu armario más de 30 pantalones no es suficiente?

The fur coat

Many of you probably think this is not ethical at all. I used to think that. But as I said before, I eat meat anyway, so now I've decided to wear fur aswell, as I came to the conclusion that it doesn't make any difference. I took this fur coat from my mum's closet. She hasn't worn it for a long time, so I decided to try it. And I love it. This week is being considerably cold, and wearing this coat is like having a blanket on you. You cannot feel the cold weather inside.

Muchos seguramente pensaréis que esto no es ético. Yo solía pensar eso. Pero como ya he dicho en un post anterior, como carne sin reparos, así que he decidido que si me apetece ponerme abrigos de piel, también lo haré. Todo eso tras serias deliberaciones, y tras llegar a la conclusión de que esto no va a marcar ninguna diferencia. He cogido este abrigo del armario de mi madre. Ella no se lo ponía desde hace mucho tiempo, así que he decidido probarlo yo. Y me encanta. Esta semana está siendo especialmente fría, pero ir debajo de esto es como llevar una manta, es imposible que el frío te alcance metida en uno de estos abrigos.

Naomi Campbell is having -strong selection of career-spanning snaps at the Art Basel Miami Beach. She said that “it’s an honor to have your timeline in your career mapped out, and to be asked to be part of such a prestigious week is quite overwhelming,” Ms. Campbell cooed, “I’m looking forward to Art Basel with great admiration as I’ve never been.” *source: nytimes.com

The exhibition must be very inspiring one. Campbell is one of the best models and at 38 she is still big in catwalks and also in advertising. While her generation-colleagues are doing come backs -Claudia, Linda...- she has never gone.

Patrick Demarchelier is a celebrated photographer and the first non-English who was the official photographer for a member of the British Royal Family, Princess Diana.

He is also the photographer who appears in the Sex and the City movie, and he is mentioned in The Devil Wears Prada too. He works mainly for Vogue USA.

Patrick Demarchelier es un célebre fotógrafo francés. Principalmente se dedica a la fotografía de moda, y fue el primer fotógrafo no inglés que se convirtió en fotógrafo oficial de un miembro de la familia real británica: Diana. Además, aparece en la película de Sexo en NY y es mencionado en El Diablo Viste de Prada. Sus editoriales aparecen con regularidad en el Vogue americano.

The biggest jewellery heist ever in France

Four robbers steal €80 million from a Paris diamond store

France was shaken by the news: diamonds and other valuables worth up to €80 million were robbed from a luxury boutique in Paris.

The four armed thieves – some dressed in drag – burst into the Harry Winston jewellers on the exclusive Avenue Montaigne in the 8^e arrondissement, the centre of the French capital and the heart of luxury shopping yesterday. They made off with almost all the valuables in the shop. It is said they knew the shop very well because they managed to steal even the jewels hidden out fo sight of the public, and they also knew they names of some of the employees. They were as quick as lightning because they do so in less than fifteen minutes. These jewellers had been robbed 14 months ago when thieves got away with jewellery worth €10 million.

It is the biggest heist in France history, and the second in the world, only beaten by the jewellery heist in Amberes in 2003, when they stole 100 million of euros.

Harry Winston

Francia se despertó conmocionada con la noticia: la joyería histórica Harry Winston había sido atracada y los ladrones se robaron diamantes y otras joyas por valor de 80 millones de euros.

Los cuatro ladrones armados -dos de ellos vestidos de mujer - irrumpieron en la joyería Harry Winston, situada en la Avenue Montaigne, en el 8^e arrondissement, el corazón de París y la meca de las compras de lujo de la capital francesa, ayer por la tarde, cuando la tienda permanecía abierta al público. Se llevaron casi todo lo que había en la tienda. Detectives han confirmado que los ladrones conocían muy bien la tienda ya que sabían el nombre de algunos de los empleados y robaron incluso las joyas que no estaban expuestas al público y que estaban escondidas en lugares supuestamente secretos de la tienda. Fueron rápidos y eficientes, ya que en quince minutos escasos fueron capaces de llevarse diamantes y joyas por valor de 80 millones de euros. Esta joyería había sufrido un atraco considerable hace 14 meses, cuando les robaron joyas por valor de 10 millones de euros. Ha sido el mayor atraco a una joyería en la historia de Francia, y el segundo en todo el mundo, solo superado por el robo que tuvo lugar en 2003 en Amberes, cuando los ladrones consiguieron llevarse 100 millones de euros.

The unknown, the shabby and the creep

Apparently, they all made an agreement before the première, and they all made a pact to look uncool on purpose. Because if not, I don't find another explanation. Paz Vega, the unknown girl, in unknown designer. Scarlett looking quite shabby in Stella McCartney, and Eva Mendes, sucking up to his boss, Calvin Klein. The good point is that it was in Madrid, so the world won't notice this disaster. Oh! they were here to attend the première of "The Spirit".

Aparentemente, estas tres hicieron un pacto antes de la première, y decidieron que se vestirían horrendas a propósito. Si no, no me explico el porqué de estos modelitos. Paz Vega, la chica desconocida, con ropa de diseñadores que ni se mencionan, descubriendo la tendencia de los brillos cuatro años después de que haya dejado de ser tendencia. Scarlett en la foto de arriba parece que como mucho, llevar ropa de Primark, y en la de abajo, va de Stella, aunque honestamente, ese estampado y esa falda le hacen un flaco favor a su silueta. Y por último, Eva Mendes, en un ataque de peloteo, fue a la rueda de prensa y al estreno vestida por su jefe, Calvin Klein. Vinieron al estreno de "The Spirit". En fin, menos mal que este desastre estilístico tuvo lugar en Madrid, y el mundo jamás se dará cuenta.
